Niles Park District performing arts program offers a variety of Dance classes that accommodate many levels of abilities and personal styles.  Our professional teaching staff has been selected for their training, competence and dedication to dance and their students.  Please register early, classes fill quickly.  Classes are held at the Howard Leisure Center Dance Studio.

 

Meet Our Dance Instructors! 

Shellie Kernzer

Shellie has been dancing since 5 years old, and trained at various studios in Northwest Indiana.  She moved to Chicago in 2007, and attended Northeastern Illinois University where she ultimately decided to major in dance.  She successfully graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011 with a BA in Dance Performance and Teaching.  Since graduation, she has danced with Reveries in Motion Dance Company, taught dance technique to an array of ages, and has had the pleasure of learning as a work/study at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's Youth Program.

 

Jacqueline Mendoza
Jackie began dancing at the age of 3 at various Chicago dance studios before landing herself at Northeastern Illinois University where she studied Early Childhood Education and Dance. Ballet is her passion but she also studied yoga philosophy, creative movement, tap, lyrical, contemporary, modern, and 3 styles of spanish dance including flamenco. Jackie has had the pleasure of working with the Ruth Page NEIU youth program since 2008 and is currently working with a Chicago dance company to promote in residency art education programs in Chicago Public Schools.


Katie Walsh
Katie Walsh is a native of the northwest side of Chicago. She grew up taking dance classes in Park Ridge starting at the age of three and fell in love immediately! Katie also stayed involved in dance through various programs at her high school, Loyola Academy, and danced all the way through college. She was the head captain of Dominican University's dance team her senior year, and went on to coach high school poms. Through all of these experiences, she has been trained in jazz, tap, ballet/pointe, contemporary/lyrical, poms, and musical theater. In addition to dance, Katie loves to teach and holds an Illinois State Professional Teaching License in elementary education.

Class Descriptions & Attire:

 

Ballet & Tap (Ages 3-4)
Combination class introducing ballet and tap. This class will focus on correct technique and terminology, address grace and poise, and review rhythm and style. Girls Attire: leotard, tights, tap shoes, ballet shoes, optional skirt or tutu.  Boys Attire: black pants, white t-shirt, dance shoes.

Ballet & Tap (Ages 5-6)
Combination class progressing with ballet and tap. This class will teach more solid ballet technique, improve upon quicker tap steps, and introduce more complex choreography. Girls Attire: leotard, tights, tap shoes, ballet shoes, optional skirt or tutu.  Boys Attire: black pants, white t-shirt, dance shoes.

Ballet, Tap, Jazz (Ages 7-9)
An upbeat class for newer dancers! Even if you've never danced before, you can experience all the fun, technique and style that this combination class has to offer. Learn intricate and appropriately challenging choreography as a class while working on individual goals. Girls Attire: leotard, tights, dance pants (capri length) or dance shorts, tap shoes, jazz shoes.  Boys Attire: black pants, white t-shirt, dance shoes.

Advanced Dance I (Ages 8-10)
This dance class is for students 8 to 10 years of age who have at least 3 years prior experience in dance. Students will work on more complex ballet and jazz movement along with other important dance concepts. Girls Attire: leotard, tights, dance pants (capri length) or dance shorts, tap shoes, jazz shoes.  Boys Attire: black pants, white t-shirt, dance shoes.

Advanced Dance II (Ages 10-12)
In this class your dancer will work on ballet and jazz techniques.  This includes barre work, center combinations, leaps and turns.  Advanced Dance II is geared for those who have taken at least 4 years of dance.  Girls Attire: leotard, tights, dance pants (capri length) or dance shorts, tap shoes, jazz shoes.  Boys Attire: black pants, white t-shirt, dance shoes.

Movin & Groovin (Ages 2-3)
This class is filled with lots of fun activities involving lively music.  Children will meet new friends while dancingm skipping and twirling.  We will focus on developing large motor skills, rhythm, coordination and balance.

Preschool Ballet & Tap (Ages 3-5)
Dance your little heart out with our preschool dance class.

Itty Bitty Tutus & Tuxedos (Ages 2-3)
Introduce your child to dance in this fun class that explores basic dance concepts while moving creatively. Children learn how to be with others and get to dance their little hearts out at the same time!  Girls Attire: leotard, tights, ballet shoes, optional skirt or tutu.  Boys Attire: black pants, white t-shirt, dance shoes.

Pom Squad (Ages 5-8)
Poms dance is the perfect class for anyone interested in learning the basic concepts of jazz dance and cheer.  We will cover arm positions, jumps, and kicks that you may see on the court or your favorite team's games.  We will also be incorporating sparkly poms to create unique visuals to fun upbeat music.  Poms is a great way to build stamina, coordination, and flexibility of a dancer.  Girls Attire: jazz shoes, leotard, tights, dance pants (capri length) or dance shorts.  Boys Attire: jazz shoes, black pants, white t-shirt.


SPIRNG DANCE RECITAL

  • Niles Park District annual spring dance recital is tentatively scheduled for Sunday May 7
  • Dance Recital participation is optional
  • Costumes are an extra fee of approximately $50.00
